  • social networking sites and virtual enviroments have become online meeting places where users (members, players and residents) can interact and express themselves
  • sites such as YouTube and Flickr are forums for online communication that is centered on sharing, preference and popular cultural – visitors can browse content, express personal preference, add commentary and upload their own creative work

  7. Important Crisis Communication Tool – users can post messages, mark themselves safe, upload videos and check updates for major disasters around the world (e.g. earthquake, terrists attack etc.)
  8. Low Cost/Cost Effective
  9. Less time consuming – post a message or browse information at the click of a button

Disadvantages of Social Media:

  1. Intrusion into privacy – fake profiles, misleading people; users targeted based on their location, age etc; harassment, cyber-stalking and online scams can be frequently seen in day to day affairs
  2. Breakdown in family ties – people get hooked on the sites for communication with friends; close bond with family breaks down when especially young people feel free to discuss problems and share information wih peers
  3. Slightly Impersonal – automatic DM when you get a new follower doesn’t show much interest in who your new follower is. Far better to say nothing than to send a generic message


  • learners can collaborate on team projects
  • learners in the same study can co-draft documents, spreadsheets, presentation slides and  more with google docs
  • Faculty members are using blogs as additional teaching/learning resources
  • inexpensive ways to organise members, arrange meetings, spread information and gauge opinion
  • Social Media can be effective for building social authority
